The germline in multicellular organisms maintains and protects a species' genome across generations. Highly conserved and presumably ancient mechanisms perform these functions, with overlapping roles in both the embryonic and adult germ cells. We have identified and continue to study these mechanisms using the nematode C. elegans as a model system.
