Conference & Travel Grants
Each year, Undergraduate Research Programs provides support for undergraduates presenting their research at professional conferences in their field. Funding decisions are based on the quality of the student's proposal, academic record, and Biology Department faculty mentor recommendation. Proposals are reviewed on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted.
Eligibility & Details
- Open to Biology majors conducting research with a Biology faculty mentor in a Biology Department lab.
- Maximum Award amount: Undergraduate $1,000; Graduate $2,000.
- Applications reviewed on a rolling basis; submit as early as possible before your conference date.

Biology Research Award in Honor of Pat Marsteller
This award recognizes a Biology undergraduate major who is conducting outstanding independent research under the guidance of a faculty research mentor.
Students must be nominated by their research mentor; nominations may be submitted by any faculty member or principal investigator regardless of department or institution. Nominees must be pursuing a Biology major (double majors are eligible if Biology is one of the two).
To nominate a student, research mentors should submit a 1-2 page letter on letterhead addressing the criteria below, to Malia Escobar at mescoba@emory.edu. Co-signed letters from other faculty or scientific mentors (e.g., graduate students, postdocs) are welcome. Deadlines fall in early March and vary slightly year to year.
Nominations should reflect a student's:
- Natural curiosity for asking scientific questions
- Sustained interest in independent research in the biological sciences
- Growing independence as a scientific researcher
- Commitment to being a productive, supportive member of their lab community
- Contribution to scientific dialogue through presentations, theses, and/or publications
The winner is announced at the Biology Undergraduate Research Symposium Rhodes Keynote Lecture in April.
Biology Award for Excellence in Honor of Darrell Stokes
This award recognizes significant contributions to the Department of Biology and the broader Emory community. It is a $500 award given to one senior, graduating Biology major who has contributed to both the department and the Emory community, and who shows excellent academics, creativity, and leadership.
Applications are due in March; exact dates change each year but have recently been in early March. To apply, send the following to Malia Escobar at malia.escobar@emory.edu:
- A 1-2 page essay about your contribution to Emory (academic or non-academic)
- Unofficial transcript
- Letter of support from a faculty member
- Any other material that supports your application
The winner is announced at the Biology Undergraduate Research Symposium Rhodes Keynote Lecture in April.
BioMe (Biology Majors at Emory)
BioMe is a student-led organization that creates a welcoming and supportive community for all Emory students interested in the biological sciences. BioMe enriches the community through events that connect students and faculty, and supports student achievement through mentorship and professional development programming.
